Many South Florida pet owners unknowingly support puppy mills by purchasing purebred dogs from pet stores, fueling an industry known for its inhumane breeding conditions.

In response, a local no-kill shelter is stepping up to give these dogs a second chance.

Tri-County Animal Rescue, based in Boca Raton, has recently taken in several dogs rescued from puppy mills, including Cammy, a Yorkie, and June, a Shih Tzu mix.

Both dogs arrived at the shelter in need of urgent medical care, socialization, and the love they had never experienced before.

Shelter advocates are now calling on the community to choose adoption over shopping to help end the cycle of cruelty. “Puppy mills are not the solution,” said Natalie Quintero, a volunteer at the shelter. “June and Cammy came from truly horrific conditions.

They now need forever homes where they can finally be loved and cared for the way every dog deserves.”

Puppy mills are breeding facilities notorious for overcrowded cages, poor living conditions, and a lack of proper veterinary care.

These mills churn out puppies for sale in retail stores or online, often with little regard for the animals’ well-being.

Unfortunately, many of these dogs end up in shelters when families realize they cannot care for them or when they discover the pets have health or behavioral issues resulting from poor breeding.

Tri-County Animal Rescue is a no-kill shelter, meaning each animal stays until they find a permanent home. In addition to rescuing puppy mill dogs, the shelter also provides a safe haven for abandoned and surrendered animals.

As the shelter continues to rescue and rehabilitate animals in need, they are urging the public to take action by adopting, not shopping.

According to local10.com, supporting shelters like Tri-County is one of the most effective ways to stop the abuse and give these dogs the life they deserve.
